New to Racquetball?
Racquetball is a game that everyone can enjoy all year round, rain or shine. If you have never played the exhilarating sport of racquetball, you really must find out what you're missing!! It combines the social and competitive elements of sport with substantial health and fitness benefits. Give it a try!
You can learn to play racquetball from a couple of different sources:
- Find an instructor: http://www.internationalracquetball.com/ipro/people_ipro.htm (International Professional Racquetball Organization certifies instructors)
- Learn the official rules from the USAR: www.usra.org/Default.aspx?tabid=839
- Check out some videos of matches: www.racquetballonline.tv
- Read some online tips for playing: http://cemood.people.wm.edu/racquetball//
- Chat with other racquetballers: http://www.meetandplay.com forums
Next find a place to play. Most colleges have courts available to the public, some YMCAs have courts, or you can ask your local health clubs if they maintain racquetball courts. There's usually courts in every town. You can also check our club locater page. Other club locaters include: the Meet-and-Play court finder and http://www.healthclubs.com/
Some reasons to enjoy racquetball
Some of the reasons we like the sport may also appeal to you, as well:
- Racquetball affords an excellent workout--over 600 calories per hour.
- It is so easy to start out and feel a sense of accomplishment right away. All you have to do is hit the ball to the front wall! Easy! (It gets a little more skillful after that.)
- High-energy people play this sport. You have to meet them to believe them!
- It's a great off-season complement to golf and softball. It keeps you in shape for lots of other sports.
- Racquetball is fairly inexpensive to start playing--shoes, racquet, glove and eyeguards should do it. One or two lessons should also improve your enjoyment of the sport. If you don't believe me, you are invited to stop by the next game at your local club or tournament and ask a player!
Racquetball is, and always has been, fitness of the highest order
As a sport and a high intensity workout, racquetball fits perfectly into the hectic schedule of today's fitness conscious individual. From the first serve, racquetball offers many of the benefits sought by today's exercise conscious society in their fitness regimens-such as:
CALORIC CONSUMPTION
A one hour game of racquetball burns over 600 calories of energy.
This equates to more calories per hour than aerobics, cycling at
18 mph, circuit weight training, playing basketball for one hour,
running an 8 1/2 minute mile, or playing tennis. The caloric consumption
attributed to racquetball makes it an ideal sport for weight maintenance.
TOTAL BODY MUSCLE
TONE
Since racquetball involves usage of all major muscle groups, it
is an excellent vehicle for developing and maintaining muscle tone.
CARDIOVASCULAR
During one hour of recreational play, the average player will run
approximately two miles. During this time, the player's heart rate
increases and is maintained at 70-80% of it's maximum. This provides
a low level cardiovascular fitness program, especially for lower
level players, and a cardiovascular maintenance program for more
skilled and advanced players.
BALANCE AND
COORDINATION
Racquetball offers an excellent way to improve eye-hand coordination.
In an aging society this is an important additional benefit of an
exercise program, not available in non-sport activities.
FLEXIBILITY
The tremendous range of motion required to participate in racquetball
forces a certain amount of stretching, with resultant flexibility.
Many participants also utilize a pre and post game stretching program.
